RFID printers from Zebra
Key facts

An RFID printer has an integrated reader and encoder. It writes the data, such as an EPC number, to the label chip and prints the label with plain text and barcode. According to Zebra, Adaptive Encoding Technology on the ZT411, ZT421 and ZD621 eliminates complex inlay placement guidelines; the minimum transponder pitch is 16 mm.
The models differ in volume and place of use. The ZT411 and ZT421 are industrial printers with a metal frame; the UHF encoder can be fitted at the factory or on site, and the ZT411 is also available as an on-metal version. The ZD621 RFID suits the workstation, while the battery-powered ZQ511 and ZQ521 print in direct thermal mode right at the point of use. Basics on frequencies and project approach are covered in the RFID overview.
- Printing labels with an RFID inlay and encoding them in the same pass
- High volumes in logistics and production (ZT411 RFID, ZT421 RFID)
- Wide labels up to 168 mm print width (ZT421 RFID)
- Encoding at the workstation or in smaller quantities (ZD621 RFID)
- Printing and encoding at the shelf, the dock or in the vehicle (ZQ511 RFID, ZQ521 RFID)
- Barcode labels without a chip: a standard label printer is sufficient, such as the Zebra ZT411 or ZT421 without RFID
- Capturing and stocktaking goods that are already tagged: that is what RFID readers are for
- HF or NFC transponders: the printers shown encode UHF transponders; HF types are listed under RFID labels

Both printers encode the same UHF standards. The ZT411 RFID is designed for high volumes and large rolls, prints faster and is available as an on-metal version. The ZD621 RFID is compact and suits the workstation when smaller quantities are encoded. If you need the same print performance without RFID, the standard Zebra ZT411 or ZT421 is the right choice.

Frequently asked questions
Can I upgrade a ZT411 or ZT421 to RFID?
Yes. According to Zebra, the UHF encoder on the ZT411 and ZT421 can be fitted at the factory or on site, and the shop offers a UHF RFID conversion kit for this. The on-metal version is intended for the ZT411 only and, according to the data sheet, can also be upgraded in the field.
Which labels can I encode with these printers?
According to Zebra, all models shown support transponders to UHF EPC Gen 2 V2, ISO/IEC 18000-63 and RAIN RFID. For on-metal labels such as the Confidex Silverline Micro II, the label manufacturer specifies the ZT411 On Metal. Suitable labels are listed under RFID labels.
Do I need to know the exact inlay position in the label?
Not necessarily on the ZT411, ZT421 and ZD621: according to Zebra, Adaptive Encoding Technology eliminates complex RFID placement guidelines. The distance between two transponders must be at least 16 mm.
Can I print RFID labels on the move?
Yes, with the ZQ511 RFID or the ZQ521 RFID. They print in direct thermal mode at 203 dpi, operate from -20 °C to 55 °C according to the manufacturer and are rated IP54. The battery has 3,250 mAh, and connectivity is via USB, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
How does the RFID data get from my ERP to the printer?
Print and RFID data come from your labelling software or your ERP, for example as ZPL commands; the shop lists ZPL for the ZD621 RFID and the ZQ models. We set up the connection with you as part of our integration services, with OPAL Labelmanagement™ if required.
