What is GHS? (Globally Harmonised System)
The United Nations Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) provides a harmonised basis for globally consistent physical, environmental, health and safety information on hazardous chemical substances and their mixtures. Criteria have been defined for classifying the physico-chemical, health and environmental hazards of chemical substances and their mixtures. Standardised hazard statements facilitate the worldwide trade in chemicals.
WHAT IS CLP?
In the EU, GHS is implemented by Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on the classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures (the “CLP Regulation”). In line with the GHS standard, the CLP Regulation enables hazardous chemicals to be identified and communicates the hazards to users through appropriate labelling. It also forms the basis for the safety data sheets (SDS) governed by the REACH Regulation and defines the requirements for packaging hazardous chemicals.
