Global supply chains are becoming ever more complex – and efficient data processing ever more crucial. With the Smart Printing Client, you print labels directly from SAP® on internet-enabled label printers.
THE CORE PROBLEM
Fluctuating demand, laborious relabelling
Planners need ways to respond to fluctuating demand from consumers, markets and supply chains. Relabelling incoming goods is labour-intensive and potentially costly – especially when deviations and inaccuracies arise in the data.

THE SOLUTION
Smart Printing Client: SAP® label printing directly at the printer
At OPAL, we listened to our customers. Together with our experienced partner SATO we developed the Smart Printing Client: a software solution for increasing accuracy and efficiency. The SAP® software sends the information directly to the printer – exactly right for companies operating in very different markets.
THE KEY FEATURES
What the Smart Printing Client offers
- →Easy registration: new internet-connected printers are registered using a token – only authorised devices communicate with the printer.
- →Secure channel: the printer uses a secure connection and the print data is strongly encrypted. Tampering attempts are prevented.
- →Integrated into SAP®: the printers receive print jobs directly from SAP® – regardless of location.
- →Multiple input options: input via display, external keyboard or barcode scanner – a complete solution for printing.
- →User interface: labels can be selected via a colour display and printed on site without additional devices.
THE TECHNOLOGY
What does the Smart Printing Client mean for SAP®?
The Smart Printing Client is an application programming interface (API) based on the SATO Application Enabled Printing (AEP) technology platform. Complex interfaces and customer terminals for label printing become superfluous: label printing is handled in SAP® and directly on the printer display.
Thanks to the secure communication between printer and SAP®, companies access data directly from their ERP system and control label printing – internally as well as with external partners, suppliers and subcontractors. The labour-intensive relabelling of incoming goods is eliminated, and changes to layout and data are applied across the board and without delay.
